Tune Tape Tuesday #33

Here in Britain, we seem determined not to rest on the laurels of last Summer's Olympic Golds. What with Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, the Stones playing Glastonbury, and the sun shining for more than 4 consecutive days, it's set to be a Summer of just as many impressive firsts. Not wanting to feel left out, I've decided to break a little personal best of my own: this Tune Tape will be the BIGGEST yet, with 30 massive tracks to accompany your Summer. In light of the gargantuan size of this collection, I've decided not to blurb each track; I'll just do a paragraph outlining the best (just in case anyone gives a crap what I think). So with no further ado; I give you the Soundtrack to your Summer...

One of the stand out tracks of this week, if only for originality, is Sombear's Love You In The Dark. It's chillingly sexy, with a haunting, grinding, bassline wobble providing a backbone to some electrically altered vocals. Not quite Dubstep, not quite Electro, and not quite Chillwave, I've put it in its very own category of 'SexDrop'. Maybe it'll catch on, who knows.
Next up is Lane 8, who have been gaining a lot of exposure these past few weeks with some truly great Progressive House tracks - including, but not exclusive to, Be Mine. Prog House has got to be the best genre for the Summer months - none other would be at home in cars with the windows down, at barbeques, picnics, or sunbathing on the beach. Just invest in some good speakers.
For those that like their Drum'n'Bass served straight up, check out Seba with Identity, who mixes some classic DnB basslines and beats with other-worldly robotic lyrics. "This is my sound."
For some more of what I'm pioneering as 'SexDrop', have a listen to Stwo's Lovin U, which layers some beautiful female RnB lyrics on top of a wobble that makes you want to procreate. Alternatively, just switch on your subwoofer and let the bass make love to that.
I've talked a lot about the 'New Indie' sound, and The Night VI's exemplifies the female-led strand of the genre. With echoes of bands like The Jezabels and Camera Obscura, Thinking of You has a sadness and a strength about it; a vunerability that comes from the nature of the lyrics and a solidarity from the confident vocals. Good stuff.
I've been banging on about London Grammar for ages, and it would seem that at last they might get some global recognition: they've teamed up with Disclosure on their new track, Help Me Lose My Mind. As usual, Disclosure have guaranteed that you won't be able to get this song out of your head for weeks, but good on the boys for choosing such great artists to do collabs with. For a second serving of London Grammar, they've also released a solo track, Strong. With a distinctive 90's-inspired, feminist feel (take your cues from Alanis Morisette, No Doubt, Garbage, Madonna's Frozen), it really is a beautiful showcase of lead singer Hannah Reid's vocal range.
Right, hands up who likes saxophone solos? That's everyone then. This week I'm giving you double doses, first with Postiljonen's Atlantis, whose 80's sounding solo gives way an ethereal Chillwave number; secondly with Klingande and their Prog House track Jubel (think along the lines of Klangkarussell's Sonnentanz).
If you'd rather some Electro with your House, stick on Vicetone's remix of Matthew Koma's One Night. A total guilty pleasure, but hey, everything in moderation, right?
Seeing as you've nearly strayed into the world of Pop, why not jump right in and check out Urban Noize's remix of the utterly fabulous Lana Del Rey's new track, American, which features another chart heavyweight: Jay-Z. This is possibly the American equivalent of that collaboration Florence & The Machine did with Dizzee Rascal at Glastonbury. Legendary? You decide.
T'wouldn't be a Tune Tape without a cover or two. This week it's split between Parra for Cuva's cover of Chris Isaak's classic Wicked Games (a song I now have three different cover versions of on my iTunes. Apparently it never gets old.), and Alice Jemima taking on Blackstreet's No Diggity (of which, if you were paying attention, I featured Bondax's remix of last week - yay for continuity!). Parra for Cuva puts a groovy little salsa beat onto Isaak's original, as well as using female vocals to give it a different edge. I think it works. As for Alice Jemima, I still prefer Chet Faker's cover of the same song, but hey, good effort gal.
Jai Paul, after the success of relatively underground anthems like BTSTU and Jasmine, has returned with his new track, Track 3/Zion Wolf. It's a slightly different sound for him, perhaps a little more commercial, but no less catchy or enjoyable. Have a listen and see if you agree.
If you're up for a solo boogie (who isn't), stick on Figgy's track, Can't Hide, who, in a Giraffage style, mixes up the CeCe Peniston (lol) classic, Finally, in a totally awesome way. Forget tragic Dad-dancing on a wedding discofloor, this track comes with bags of street cred. Wig out, man.
Whenever I find a good mashup, I try to include it in the Tune Tape. This week's is Blood Orange's mix of Kendrick Lamar and The Sugababes. And who doesn't love the Sugababes? No-one? Well, let Blood Orange change your mind with this mashup - there's no guilt in this pleasure.
As we're on Pop, Panic City have remixed Maroon 5's new track, Love Somebody quite successfully. Although I have no idea what the original sounds like, they've laid down an Electro House pulse onto it, and come out with something that a DJ like Tiesto would be pretty proud of. Totally Euro, totally naughty, totally worth it.
On the back of their huge hit, 100%, Duke Dumont has released its new offering, Hold On, which is a bit more introspective and deep than their previous track. 'Hold On' to your hats, this one's gonna be big.
Finally for some Chillwave (swiftly turning into the signature genre of Tune Tapes), have a play of Brothertiger and Gallant, who serve up some self-searching music with In Mind and If It Hurts, respectively. Perfect for all my 'Rants' on here, but hopefully they'll provide some chilled-out contrast to your Summer playlist.

Whichever part of the Northern Hemisphere you're in, enjoy the Summer Sunshine!

Wish List Mondays #34 - Do It Like A Dude.

After having packed up, and moved, my vast collection of clothes four times in the last month, I've realised that I have more Men's items in my wardrobe than Women's. Before anyone comments, this is not because I'm the kind of girl that steals the clothes left behind at the end of 'liaisons' (hi Mum), nor do I don a fake beard and stuff a pair of socks down my pants to pretend I'm a guy. The simple fact is: Men's clothes are simply more comfortable. They last longer because they're usually better quality, they're roomy so you can eat as much as you want, and you can pretend like your "boyfriend" gave them to you (when really you just bought it for yourself.). In Winter, there's nothing better than snuggling into an big man's jumper and curling up on the sofa. In summer, I like to wear men's shirts - as beach coverups, pyjamas, light jackets...they're probably the most versatile item I own. In light of my love for androgynous, or unisex, fashion, I've decided to devote a whole Summer Wish List to getting the ideal mix of feminine/masculine. So do it like a brother, or do it like a dude, here comes Wish List #34...

1. Short Sweatshirt Dress, H&M, £20. I just wanna make you sweat, here.
2. Cream Studded Bow Trim Straw Boater, River Island, £16. Pick the short straw, here.
3. Men's Kitsuné Jersey Mariniere, Petit Bateau, £42 (Sale Price). Jersey shore, here.
4. Sky Washed Oxford Slim Fit Shirt, Charles Tyrwhitt, £25 (Sale Price). Reach for the sky, here.
5. 152 Series Rose Gold-Plated Steel Watch by Uniform Wares, Mr Porter, £220. Man of Steel, here.
6. Signet Ring by Laura Lee, ASOS, £150. Put a ring on it, here.
7. Beige Shorts, H&M, £13. Who wears short shorts, here.
8. MOTO Vintage Boyfriend Tapered Jeans, Topshop, £42. Billy's jeans, here.
9. Le Pliage Medium Travel Bag in Graphite by Longchamp, Selfridges, £63. Travel my way, here.
10. 'Hamble Oak' Brogues in Nude, Clarks, £40 (Sale Price). Rogue in a brogue, here.
11. 'High Vamp' Loafers, Topshop, £50. Loaf around, here.

Living for the Weekends - St Paul's Carnival

Well, Britain, what a bloody fantastic weekend. Not only did Andy Murray become the first Briton to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry 77 years ago, we were also treated to a weekend of pure, unadulterated sunshine - something that also hasn't happened in 77 years. This weekend I celebrated the hot weather by heading down to St. Paul's carnival, a Caribbean Street Festival hailed as the "better, and less commercial" Notting Hill Carnival. And, having sampled both in my lifetime, I'd have to say I agree. Bristol's older equivalent seems far more authentic - more music, more food, and less hectic - altogether, far more Caribbean. The carnival started on Friday night and lasted into the early hours of this morning. If it hadn't clashed with Wimbledon, you would have had some trouble stopping me from pitching a tent and staying there the whole weekend. Here's what I got up to...

Cuppy filled up with Rum'n'Lemon

Tune Tape Tuesday #32

Yes, I am fully aware it's been a whole 2 weeks with no Tunes. But what with starting a job with early mornings and late nights, looking for a flat in the lovely city of Bristol, and muttering curses under my breath at all the lucky people enjoying Glastonbury this weekend, I've hardly had a moment to catch my breath. First world problems, eh. Hopefully I can make it up to you with this cracking selection of tunes for the beginning of July (where has the year gone?!). A word of caution to this tale: these tracks may test you. They're all what I like to call 'growers' - you may not understand them, or even like them, on the first listen. But give the kids a chance. I promise you will be rewarded.

Tagged as 'SubSoul' on Soundcloud, this fresh sound is perfect to kick off this week's list. It's a little bit Chillwave, a little bit Electronica, a little bit gentle DubStep - rolled into an original track that will worm its way into your ears, brain, and trickle on down into your heart. The musical equivalent to a Summer breeze, Py's ethereal vocals are so high they border on being ultrasound. The gentle beats of the bass anchor it in the here and now and prevent it becoming a 'chipmunk track'. A tricky balance pulled off with aplomb. See if you agree.

Remixes of up-n-coming R&B star Miguel have been the project du jour - featuring at least twice before on TTT. This month, his song Adorn has been taken on by the marvellous Star Slinger, who's been a firm favourite of mine since I saw him live at Parklife fest 2 years ago. His signature is quirky Electro takes on even quirkier tracks - not for everybody - but this track seems to have mass-appeal. With a beat that makes you want to "shake it, baby", I defy anyone who can listen to this without their mood lifting. Happiness is just a click away...

The song of previous summers has been given a facelift for 2013. This updated version has got, wait for it, vocals - curtesy of  Will Heard. His sex-smooth vocals are a perfect accompaniment for this sunshine anthem - which combines one of the catchiest sax riffs with the freshest of progressive house beats. An ideal track to take you from BBQ to street party. Enjoy those beats and burgers.

As R Kelly famously said: "after the show, there's the after-party...then take it to your room and f*ck somebody" [explicit version]. If it wasn't Ignition he was putting on for his lovemaking, it would have been this track by Dornik. Cheesy R&B 'lovemaking' tracks have been a makeover of late; they're subtler, dirtier, and way less cringe. Take Something About You as a case in point. With lyrics that wouldn't be out of place in an early 00's Usher song, the sophisticated Chillwave beat picks it up and drops it in a totally different headspace. Unlike putting on some Usher ("Usherrr"), the person you're enjoying some 'quality time' with won't entirely lose their erection. Win-win.

Here's an example of what a difference a beat makes. These songs sound like two totally different tracks - so much so that I found myself checking on my iPod what the song I was listening to was. The original 'alt-electro' bordering on Chillwave track is impressive, but the infectious beat detracts from the emotion of the lyrics. Take that away, and it becomes something totally different: a powerful, piano-accompanied, beautifully boned track - that rather than being less than the original, is, I think, so much more. Black Atlass is a new artist that I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on; watch this space.

It wouldn't be a Tune Tape Tuesday without some covers. Before I say anything, let me just say that the originals of these two tracks - Oblivion by Grimes, and Twice by Little Dragon - are two of my favourite songs ever. So for me to approve of another artist's cover is a big deal. Both Wilsen and Freeze-Tag have stripped the originals back to their bare bones - getting rid of the beat and concentrating purely on the vocals. In Wilsen's case, you might be forgiven for thinking this was simply an acoustic version by Grimes of her original track; the vocals are uncannily similar - both ethereally high, like a fairy who's inhaled helium. Freeze-Tag flips not only the sound but also the gender, slowing it right down and putting much more emphasis on the vocals than in the original. It takes some time to get used to, but I think it's a great fresh take on an original that, for me, never gets old.

This is honestly one of the most organic, and original, collaborations I've heard in some time. Feist (of 1,2,3,4) has teamed up with new guys Timber Timbre to create this beautiful track. As I stated at the beginning, this song is a grower - it might not catch you straight away, but give it a proper listen, and I think you'll agree it's a keeper. The artists' vocals work perfectly together, Feist providing the female dreaminess she's best at, Timber Timbre's masculine, earthy tones rooting it in genuine emotion. Oh and their harmonies are to die for. If you're feeling like an antidote to Summer euphoria, look no further than this thought-provoking track.

From the thought-full to the thought-less, this remix of NoNoNo's track is a mindless joy-fest. While you won't find any deep meaning here, by God you'll have a good time. There's something a little bit retro about this; perhaps it's the French accent on the vocals that remind me of c.2007 Yelle (aka my 'techtonique' phase), perhaps it's the feel-good beat that reminds me of a simpler time, who knows. It's best not to think too much - just stick it on and wave your arms about.

Shout out to a fellow Kiwi who's taking the NZ charts by storm. Lorde is a teen who's sound has mass-appeal. The infectious beat and catchy melody of her first single, Tennis Court, is slowly winging its way across the seas and will no doubt end up on Radio 1 in a matter of weeks. Make yourself sound super-cool by saying you found it first. Your friends won't think you're a hipster-dick at all.

From time to time, I like to see what people have done with a favourite song. Dreamin' by Feldberg is an old favourite I discovered about 3 years ago with the help of a Kitsuné Maison mixtape. This week I listened to what Kyte has done with the track...and I like. The original (which you can listen to here) is a beautiful bit of French electro-pop, which Kyte has honoured in his remix, adding a new dimension through a slow, groaning Dubstep backbeat and some electronic tintinnabulation (that's an amazingly pretentious word for 'tinkles') over the top. I like his style.

Cyril Hahn is the artist on everybody's lips at the moment (just look at that play count - only 4 days' worth!), and for good reason. His take on Destiny's Child's Say My Name was one of the most original and catchy remixes anyone had heard in a while. This week, he's released his own single: Perfect Form. It's undeniably Cyril, but I think lacks the mass-appeal of some of his previous work. He's got a few kinks to work out before he finds his own voice, but this track certainly witnesses him heading in the right direction. Keep at it Cyril! (always makes me think of Archer...)

I realise that for you Hip-Hop fans out there, TTT has been a little thin on the ground of late. Hopefully I can make it up to you by supplying you with two tracks that showcase where HipHop is heading in 2013. Candles by Jez Dior juxtaposes a 'Cali' style of rap with a female Indie-Folk chorus with, I think, a lot of success. Jez's sound is young and carefree, perfect for Summer listening, while the chorus provides a bit of sophistication to what otherwise would be quite an immature track. Rhythum's track is a return to the old-skool sound, combining a mid-90's sound with a Jay-Z sample. Far from being dated, Rhythum updates an old vibe for a 2013 audience. Now that's what I call fresh.

Finally, it's an old classic given a Electro facelift by the skilled hands of Bondax. There isn't a person on earth who doesn't love the original, and Bondax has been pretty faithful to the boys of Blackstreet, cutting it up and layering it over a broken Electronic beat. Twerk it, yo. Peace out.

Belle x

Wish List Mondays #32 - Barcelona Special

This time in a month, I'll be in Barcelona. I've never been, and I'm really excited. So excited that I'm already planning a wardrobe for when I get there. I'm envisaging sunny days spent meandering through the Old City, pedalling along the seafront in the evening, and drinks at rooftop bars under the stars. As usual, my style-spiration is, as always, Audrey Hepburn: cropped capri pants with chiffon shirts, cats-eye sunglasses, and when night falls, jewels to catch the candlelight. Wish List Mondays #28 - Festival Special

Let's be honest, Britain is not a country made for Summer. Our beaches are pebbly and unfriendly; our barbecues a damp, undercooked embarrassment; and the less said about the temperature the better. But despite this, we trump every other country in one Summer essential: Festivals. Yep, the British sure do know how to organise a piss-up in a field. Living in the UK, it's easy to forget that we're hugely respected world-leaders in both music and fashion. Perhaps that's why we've managed to nail the essence of music festivals - by understanding that the two pretty much go hand in hand. Whilst I wouldn't say I'm a festival veteran, I've been to enough to know that there tend to be three general types of styles that ladies emulate when attending these events: the Hippie, the Rock Chick, and the 90's. Wish List Mondays #27 - 'Prints for a Day'

You know it's exam period when the number of people listed on Facebook chat passes the 100+ mark. It seems that the one time of year we are supposed to have our heads deeply immersed in a stack of books, we turn to stalking our exes, posting hilarious YouTube links, and sharing as many competition pictures as humanly possible. Funny that. One positive thing to come out of this (apart from an invaluable YouTube history) is the fact that none of us are spending our cash on going out. This means, once exams are over and you've recovered from your post-exam celebration hangovers, there should be just enough money to splash out on a whole new wardrobe for Summer. This is where I come in. Perhaps it's the artworks I've been revising for my last ever exam, perhaps its the promise of good weather, Corona, and barbecues, but I'm devoting an entire Wish List to the delectable prints that are gracing the catwalks and the high street alike - allowing you to transform yourself into a living artwork. Mix and match, clash and couple, there's no rules to this trend. In the mean time, keep your chin up, your head down, and GOOD LUCK!

1. Daisy Print Shell Top, Topshop, £30. Fresh as a daisy, here.
2. Animal Ladder Back Dress, Topshop, £36. Animal magnetism, here.

Tuesday

Wish List Mondays #25 - Men's Summer Fashion Special

First up, I'm not going crazy - I have realised that the weekend is over and today is, in fact, Tuesday. Unfortunately my day yesterday was spent travelling from one side of the country to another, then one end to the other. Anyone who is intimate with the British Rail system knows that Wifi on trains is an expensive nightmare, and because I'm a stingy student, I didn't get round to getting a post up. So...apologies. Consequently, Wish List Mondays this week is now on a Tuesday, and Tune Tape Tuesdays will now be on Wednesday. Confused? Great. Let's start.

This weekend I spent with some guy friends. Staying in a house full of men has its downsides; mainly the lack of conditioner in the shower, and the inability to borrow makeup when you've forgotten it (which I did, and paid the price of looking like an extra from Night of the Living Dead for the entire weekend). But it's also got its upsides, particularly when said gentlemen happen to be, well, rather inspiringly trendy, actually. It got me thinking that Wish List Mondays has been a bit sexist and selfish of late, concentrating on fashion for women and emulating the 'It-Girls' of the moment. In light of this, I felt that I owe the male readers of this blog a Wish List. But not just any Wish List, oh no. I thought I might be so bold as to point some of you guys/lads/comrades in the right direction in terms of what looks good in the Summer. Because - and I'm only being honest - this season seems to bring out the worst fashion failures. I know that "for now these hot days the mad blood is stirring", but that is no excuse for some of these regular atrocities made when the temperature starts to soar:

  • Walking topless anywhere other than a pool or beach. You're not going to get a tan standing inside Primark.
  • Shorts below the knee. If you're going to show some leg, you need to fully commit.
    • Side note: socks are not acceptable with shorts unless you want to look like a German tourist c.1985.
  • Flip Flops. Espadrilles all the way.
  • Low-Cut Tshirts. Offensive, in all senses of the word.
  • Finally, please refrain from wearing anything which has a logo like this:

While some of you guys out there may find it a little bit patronising that some chick is telling them what not to wear, let's face it, you're not gonna get any 'Summer Luvin' looking like the above. Trust me. So sit back, relax, and let me show you What Women Want.

Summer in the City

1. Bandana Detail T-Shirt by Ragged Priest, Topman, £28. Buy it here.
2. Rascals College Logo Sweatshirt, Urban Outfitters, £79. Buy it here.
3. Two-Tone Denim Shirt by Native Youth, Coggles, £45. Buy it here.
4. Chino Shorts by Adidas, EndClothing, £45. Buy them here.
