So after two weeks of late posts, it looks like I'm back on track: Tune Tape Tuesdays has returned to the correct day. Despite only putting the last one up 4 days ago, I've had the whole of the Easter weekend to rummage through tonnes of new music and sift out the ones that I hope you'll all enjoy. As with every week, I've very kindly put all of the tunes in a handy little folder so you can download whichever ones tickle your fancy. HERE IS THE LINK. Right, onto the commentary that I'm convinced no one reads, but it's fun to write and it takes up space, so here goes...
Top spot this week goes to SZA with the incredible song, Aftermath. For those that are loving an older Tune Tape spotlight, Chrome Sparks, at the moment, this should be right up your street. SZA creates a perfect chillwave track, featuring dreamy female vocals rotating above a sexy downbeat, which pushes the track on. It's a beautiful creation. I know I keep pushing him, but I honestly think Active Child is going to be the biggest thing since sliced bread. He's a newer, sexier, harp-playing Bon Iver, and his track, Evening Ceremony, publicly released only a week ago, has already been picked up by the big bosses to feature on the soundtrack of The Host (currently playing at a cinema near you). If this guy's swooping falsetto doesn't make your heart catch fire, then there is something wrong with you and you might as well give up now. Moving on, we've got a couple of Mash-Ups this week - but not mash-ups in the EDM, Top-40, in your face style you might be used to. Oh no. These two tracks, Ya Mama Can't Go Easy and Summer Swerve by g4gorilla and DJ Bahler respectively, are almost unrecognisable as separate tracks - such is the sophistication of their integrations. It also helps that the tunes they used aren't perhaps the most well-known; it keeps things fresh and interesting. DJ Bahler's offering was immediately put in the playlist simply because it uses Clams Casino's Swervin' - which pretty much gives me an aural (that's AU) orgasm every time I hear it. So top marks, Mr DJ. Mikal Cronin's song, Weight, sounds like it was plucked straight out of the heady Indie days (or daze) of the mid-00's, with it's feel good, Cali-surfer vibe. Which is just the kind of injection Indie music needs right now. A little bit of positivity, y'knaw? Putting that aside, it's damn catchy, which never hurts. Next up: are you ready for the ruffneck bass? Because that's exactly what Jamtech feat. Bounty Killer (big fan of anyone with a chocolate bar in their name) are bringing to the table this week with Dedicated, a huge Dancehall track that's guaranteed to get some asses on the floor. If you're not a fan of Dancehall, but you still like to dance, check out Michael Wood's track, Demo #4. It's a House track that's a total return to basics - not progressive, not electro, just damn good. Stick it on and freak out. 3LAU, on the other hand, is mixing a host of different Dance genres in his tune, I Could Be The Bass. Bringing in elements of Electro and Dubstep in a totally fresh way, this is one banger that will really test out the quality of your speakers. Returning to my favourite genre of the moment, Chillwave, is Giraffage's remix of Tinashe's The Last Night on Earth. Which is probably the best occasion to play this at. Ethereal and upbeat, with influences from early Digitalism and Simian Mobile Disco, it switches your mood from zero to positive in a matter of seconds. Jerome LOL's rework of Classixx's Holding On has a similar happy vibe, with a paired-down Dancehall bassline to get some fingers snappin'. A good one for the strut to work. If you're a fan of Bright Eyes (who isn't), then put on Pure X's lazy track, Someone Else. With lyrics to die for (or to, depending on your mood), it's not exactly uplifting, but definitely worth a listen if you're having a bad day. In terms of Indie, this week I've included Fossil Collective's new single, Wolves. With a sound similar to Midlake, it's the perfect balance of dreamy and depressing. Which sounds bad, but is actually good. Finally, we have a final unusual Mash-Up in the form of Daughter, who covers and mixes Bon Iver's Perth with Hot Chip's Ready for the Floor. Sounds strange, but it so works. I'm no fan of Hot Chip, but I always seem to love other people's covers of them - for another example, check out Grizzly Bear's version of Boy From School HERE. Ok, that's all from me this week - I hope you enjoy the tunes!
Love,
Belle x
